Want to work in the events industry? Volunteering is a good place to start

With the current economic situation, school leavers, graduates and potential employees need to work harder to make their applications stand out, a good way of doing this is by volunteering.

Even if you work in a full time job it is really good to give something back. At Mosaic Events we try to support charities with fund raising events.

Francesca Pearson, our Senior Event Account Manager says  ‘I have worked for Mosaic Events for five years now after graduating from University I initially found it difficult to break into the events industry and was advised volunteering would be a good way to achieve vital experience in organising events.

With this I approached the local Marie Curie Cancer Care and have volunteered for the charity ever since.   We assist the fund raising office with the national initiatives such as the daffodils and collections and events such as sponsored walks, and runs.  In addition we organise our own events in the local area to raise money for the charity and local Marie Curie nursing care.

The experience of working as a volunteer has really aided my development in a range of ways, from increasing my confidence, gaining experience of running events, the organisation involved and learning to work with new people of all backgrounds and ages.   Volunteering has enabled me to gain invaluable experience from the administration, promotion, marketing and income generation which are all key skills I use for my day to day work in events.  Our main event of the year is a summer masquerade ball this year being held at York Racecourse on Saturday 19th May 2012.'

As the Director of Mosaic Events I feel it is important for us to take time to help out organisations that don't have the budget.   I have just spent the last three years as Chair of Variety at Work which is part of the Variety Club Children’s Charity organising events for both disabled and underprivileged children.  This year we are going to be involved with Young Enterprise and take part in a Business event for primary school children at New Earswick School in York.

We are also interested to hear of your past experience with volunteering or if you want to talk to us about how to get involved with the Marie Curie Ball or for the Young Enterprise Event get in touch enquiries@mosaicevents.co.uk.  We also have some additional volunteering opportunities coming over summer.
